The newly appointed Sarkin Sudan of Kontagora, Mohammed Barau has been restrained by a Minna High Court from parading himself as the Emir of Kontagora in Niger State.

Barau emerged as the new Emir of Kontagora following an election/selection process by the kingmakers of the Emirate, conducted on 19 September 2021.

But Justice Abdullahi Mikailu restrained the monarch after hearing a motion exparte moved by barrister W.Y.Mamman on behalf of his plaintiffs.

Mamman prayed the court for an interim injunction restraining Mohammed Barau as the substantive Emir of Kontagora pending the determination of the motion on notice before it.

The court also restrained the defendants, the Niger State Attorney General, Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, from installing or issuing staff of office to Mohammed Barau as Sarkin Sudan Kontagora.

In a five-paragraph affidavit, one Adam Muhammed Nasir said that after the first defendant/respondent was declared as the Emir of Kontagora, youths in Kontagora town staged a protest over the selection of new Sarkin Sudan of Kontagora.

The affidavit stated that the 2nd and 3rd defendants gave a certificate of recognition to 1st defendant on October 8 2021 at a time tension had built up in the Emirate.

The 15 plaintiffs stated that they were eligible to contest for the throne and alleged that due process was not followed during the selection of Mohammed Barau Kontagpra as the new Sarkin Sudan of Kontagora.
